\"\"The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Osogbo branch, on September 10, 2020 conducted the second edition of induction for graduate members. The ceremony was attended by distinguished and seasoned academia\/engineers around Osogbo axis. The National President of NSE was represented by Engineer Olalekan Olaitan Salami, the Chairman of NSE Osogbo branch. While delivering the President\u2019s address, Engineer Salami thanked the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Adedeji Adeleke for setting up a University with a towering outlook. He explained that, engineering education all over the world is capital intensive. Hence, he appreciated the Pro-Chancellor for the huge investment in the Faculty of Engineering. The President\/Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebola while delivering the Keynote Address thanked God for making the second edition of Graduate members\u2019 induction ceremony a reality. He said, \u201cdespite the lockdown caused by COVID-19 pandemic, that forced all schools in the country to shutdown mid March, 2020, academic programmes in Adeleke University were not completely grounded\u201d. \u201cThrough the online teaching, lectures continued and that is why we could gather here today to induct the second set of our graduates engineering.\u201d He continued and said, Engineering as a discipline is very crucial for the development of any nation\u201d. Hence, \u201cI appreciate the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, for the huge investment in the Faculty of Engineering at Adeleke University\u201d. Explaining further, he said, \u201cI made bold to state here that, \u201cAdeleke University has one of the best Engineering Faculties in Nigeria\u201d. \u201cThere are some machines and equipments in our Faculty of Engineering that you will not find in more than three other universities in Nigeria.\u201d He then charged the newly inducted NSE members to rise up to the challenges of the 21<\/span>st<\/span> century Engineering and reiterate that, \u201cif Nigeria must join the league of advanced nations soon, you, the Engineers must live up to your expectations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"The guest lecturer, Professor Abel Olajide Olorunnisola from the Department of Wood Products Engineering, University of Ibadan delivered a lecture titled, \u00a0 \u201cLiving up to the Expectations of a 21<\/span>st<\/span> Century Engineer\u201d. Defining an ideal Engineer, Prof. Olorunnisola stated that, the ideal engineer is a composite; he is not a scientist, he is not a mathematician, he is not a sociologist or a writer; but he may use the knowledge and techniques of any or all of these discipline in solving engineering problems\u2018\u2013 (Doherty, 1955). Hence, the professional expectations of a 21<\/span>st<\/span> century engineer would include:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Be a repository of knowledge and skill that is above that of an average person, have a legal status, i.e., be registered by a recognised Professional Engineering Body, be of good moral character, use of discretion and judgment in dealing with clients, place service ahead of monetary rewards, keep confidence in relationships with clients and employers, aadhere to professional code of conduct, make maximum use of his\/her skills and knowledge, use his\/her competence to its fullest, hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public, perform services only in areas of his\/her competence, act for his\/her employers as faithful agents or trustees and avoid deceptive acts.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the guest lecturer, the Public Expectations from a 21<\/span>st<\/span> Century Engineer include:<\/span> f<\/span>actual knowledge about the technology and scientific principles relevant to his\/her branch of engineering practice<\/span>, a<\/span>n ability to use technology creatively, to give the most effective solution to the problem at hand, and to do this ethically<\/span> and with a<\/span> persistently inquiring and creative mind.\u00a0 To be able to live up to the expectations of a 21<\/span>st<\/span> Century Engineer, the guest lecturer said, \u201ca first degree is not enough\u201d. The best way to keep up with the rapidly changing world is to: remain a lifelong learner who is able to learn, re-learn and unlearn and be engaged in continuous professional development to maintain your competence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Giving the critical elements needed to succeed as a 21<\/span>st<\/span> Century Engineer, Professor Olorunnisola identified \u201cT<\/span>hinking Outside the<\/b> Box\u201d<\/b>. Explaining further, he said, thinking Outside the Box is a metaphor for thinking: differently, unconventionally, or from a new perspective. \u00a0 \u00a0 According to him, Boxes are mental models including ideas, approaches, philosophies, tactics, theories, strategies, etc. What is encompassed by the words “inside the box” is analogous with the current, and often unnoticed, assumptions about a situation. Before you can think outside the Box, you have to be smart enough to know that there is a box.\u00a0 The benefits of thinking outside the box, Olorunnisola said, is that, it pushes you to;\u00a0 ask questions<\/span>, c<\/span>hallenge rigid rules and tired frameworks<\/span>, <\/span>take risks<\/span>, <\/span>imagine <\/span>, i<\/span>nvent \u2013create new ideas or methods of doing something<\/span>, i<\/span>nnovate- use better\/novel ideas\/methods of doing something and improve on how things could be done better.<\/span> Highlighting the limitations of boxes, Olorunnisola said, \u201cwe all have boxes of many different sizes and we cannot avoid building boxes\u201d. \u201cBoxes (mental models) can both guide and set you free. However, they can also obscure the truth and hold you back\u201d. \u201cThey can trap you in rigid assumptions and push you towards tired routines and stale assumptions\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, quoting Sir Eric Ashby<\/span>, Professor <\/span><\/i>Olorunnisola<\/span> sai;, \u201cthe engineer is the key figure in the material progress of the world. It is his engineering that makes a reality of the potential value of science by translating scientific knowledge into tools, resources, energy and labour to bring them into the service of man … To make contributions of this kind the engineer requires the <\/span><\/i>imagination<\/i><\/b> to visualize the needs of society and to appreciate what is possible as well as the technological and broad social age understanding to bring his vision to reality\u201d.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
