Adeleke University is pleasant to behold. I am aware of the undiluted virtues and values of the University and I therefore count it as pusulabet giriş
a privilege to be so considered for this honourable role in the buildup to this year convocation with the flagship event slated for this weekend.

I have opted for the topic THE YOUTH, THE CAREER IN A SELF RELIANT AGE for so many considered reasons. More than before, pusulabet
our higher institutions of learning are churning out hundreds of thousands of graduates and releasing them to the labour market that is gasping for breath if not already on life support. This is the time for our university graduates to seriously start thinking out of the box or even discard the box, if any, entirely. Inside the box, you are confined. Outside the box, you are limited to the perimeters. Without the box, the world is your constituency.

pusulabet güncel giriş

Please follow me as we navigate through this discourse.

(A) WHO IS A YOUTH

The United Nations, for statistical purposes, defines those persons between the age of 15 and 24 as youth without prejudice to other definitions by member States. By this definition, UN claims that about 20% of the world population is made up of youths.

Other definitions point in similar direction. Merriam-Webster defines youth as “the early period of existence, growth or development”. Wikipedia says “the time between childhood and adulthood”.

The definition of who is a youth varies across jurisdictions. In Brazil, youth is categorized as those between the age of 15 and 29, same as in Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). In Vietnam, it is between the age of 15 and 35.

In Nigeria, youth is defined as all members of the Federal Republic of Nigeria between the age of 18 and 35. This definition finds favour with many other African countries. The categorization is of significance to Nigeria and to us in this gathering today for many reasons:

Most of our graduates of today fall in this category;

In public institutions of higher learning, the mean age of graduates is gradually closer to 30 years than to 20 due to the deluge of problems and challenges that are not limited to funding, staffing, conditions of service, ethical and moral laxity resulting in cultism, occultism, etc;

Of course, the age bracket of 18 to 35 is the experimental age and the period when the youth is expected to have settled down and be identified with a permanent and sustainable means of livelihood;

Even those who are not opportune to pass through formal education also recognize this age bracket for what is it;

We are therefore talking to the youth of the defined age bracket by Nigerian standard, and those who must be hungry for career choice and career progression to become self-reliant individuals in a seemingly troubled time and age.

However, before going much further, let us consult the Book of Life, the Holy Bible

Psalm 127:4 makes allusion to who a youth is. “As arrows are in the hands of a mighty man, so are children of the youth”.

Ecclesiastes 12:1 admonishes “Remember now thy creator in the day of the youth when the evil days have not come”

1 Timothy 4:12 says “Let no man despise thy youth”.

The key message from above is that the youth is fully equipped physically and mentally to launch into the world of exploration and make his choice. This is the age that the person so defined as youth cannot afford to misuse or waste away.

Remember that as graduates of a revered citadel of learning, much is expected of you in terms of learning and character. The youths that excelled in the Bible demonstrated exemplary courage and goodness of character. Joseph refused advances from Pontifer’s wife, which could have drowned his career and life if he had succumbed to the same. Daniel did not allow the King’s lucre to derail him and his colleagues while in a strange land. David shamed Goliath and did not allow the uncircumcised to despise his youth. Jesus Christ carried out His mission on earth within the age bracket of the youth, so also were the disciples turned apostles of Christ. Moses passed the age of youth before his eyes opened that he was born a slave. Judas was likely a youth when he betrayed Jesus.

No wonder in our societies of today, the youth represents the good, the bad and the ugly sides of the human race. The first set of Nigerian leaders were all in their youthful years. Several adventurers and inventors in the field of science, engineering, medicine, information technology, etc. in Nigeria, Africa and the rest of the world were youths. Albert Eistein, Bill Gates, Adam Smith, Professor Ayodele Awojobi, Aliko Dangote etc started remoulding human thoughts at what age?

So also are the undesirable elements in our nations today. The youths have infested the society with cultism, occultism, kidnapping, rent seeking, robbery, cyber-crimes, political thuggery, etc. Some youths even see these types of anti-social behavior not only as a way of life and means of economic survival but also as full-time carrier!

But your story is and must ally only with those whose youthful days keep bringing sweet memories. Those who opted for carriers that shaped human history. Youths who brought ideas to business, politics and management and the ideas keep ruling the world after them. Those who have distinguished themselves in chosen fields of human endeavors. Those whose performances have become reference points in national and intellectual discourse.

(B) WHAT IS A CAREER

Longman Dictionary defines a Career as a job or profession a person has been trained for and which he/she can do for a long period of his life. A person can have a career in teaching, medicine, journalism, etc,

Oxford English Dictionary on the other hand says “a person’s course of progress through life: working aspects of a person’s life”.

In Latin, the word career emanated from carrus, that is a course in one’s public or professional life. So many things are therefore attached to the term career such as career choice, career development, career management, career progression, career changing, career success, career support, etc.

Borrowing from the above, hardly has the challenge been this daunting. Graduates of higher institutions are under pressure to unlearn, learn and relearn. You are being challenged to shift paradigms. The era of free lunch is over. There is no Father Christmas again. This University has prepared you for the challenges ahead. I believe you have been trained on the basics of entrepreneurship. Your first, second and even third degrees is no more than an open ticket to any career of your choice. Gone are the days when Banking, Finance and Accounting Graduates were the toast of the banking industry. Today, many leading bankers came from the sciences, law, engineering and medical background. We have accounting graduates that ended up in medicine. Apprise yourselves, rejig, go for the gold.

Be admonished:

Your career is your meal ticket,

Your career is the gateway to societal recognition,

Your career is the platform for legacies.

Your career is your service to God and humanity.

What more! Your career is the sure bet for your self-reliant status in this challenged age and time.

(C) THE SELF RELIANT AGE

Again, Merriam Webster defines self-reliance as “a reliance on one’s own efforts and abilities”.

However, RW Emerson in 1841 thought of self-reliance to include elements of thinking independently, embracing individuality, striving towards own goals.

Generally, therefore, self-reliance involves solving problems and making decisions, it engenders self-acceptance, self-knowledge, self-compassion, self-perspectives with direction.

A candidate aspiring for self-reliance must therefore be prepared to accept himself/herself; be his own friend, develop inner confidence, make his own decisions, recognize himself for whom he is, and accept himself for whom he is.

A serious aspirant to self-reliance status must have his own values, not one that is relying on “things” to feel happiness. He must be prepared to decide who he wants to be and how he wants to get there.

The above attributes have been entrenched in you, I am sure, during the duration of your academic sojourn in this God inspired ivory tower.

As youths, what is left of you is to translate your youthful age to a formidable and self-reliant milieu, where service to God and humanity takes precedence. And to do this through a career choice that is best fit, glorious and emulative.

You are likely to be confronted with a plethora of challenges in whatever career you choose. But always remember that the fiercest of fire maketh the finest of gold. You cannot make an omelette without breaking egg. Those who chose the professions such as banking, accounting, law, mechanical engineering, architecture, medicine passed through some tutelage to become leaders in those professions. Submit yourselves to those professions for further training. Some professions such as accounting, banking, arts, etc. are very liberal and accommodative such that your type of first degree is no barrier to entry.

A self-equipped mind is a self-reliant and liberated mind. It is no longer smiling outside there. The opportunities for employment in government and other Ministries, Departments and Agencies are thinning out. Unemployment rate is over 30%. The fiscal budget is stressed.; Nigeria’s local currency is under continuous threat of devaluation; and public debt is mounting. Private employers are going through hard time. States are in arrears of salaries and allowances and the minimum wage of N30,000 is a big challenge to the finances of many States and Local Governments in the country. There is hardly anybody to look up to as potential employer of labour in Nigeria’s fragile economy. Rise up to the occasion and become an employer of labour. Adeleke University has awakened the consciousness in you.

And for the entrepreneurial minded graduates, Nigeria is a land of unlimited opportunities. There are untapped mines in agriculture, especially farming, tourism, micro enterprises, small to medium enterprises, information technology, arts and craft, entertainment, hospitality, etc. Yes, you will be told of the problems of infrastructures, insecurity, harsh operating conditions, multiple taxation as charges, depreciating values of the Naira, unhealthy competition, etc. But I assure, and speaking from personal experience, that the problems can be overcome and you can still excel amidst all the problems and attain self-reliance, as defined, with time. Be aware too, that there are government and NGOs induced incentives for some businesses in the country. They are put in place for your likes to tap.

(D) CONCLUSION

As you prepare your journey towards a self-reliant world, let me leave you with some of the sayings of the wise towards this direction:

To find yourself, think yourself – Socrates

Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary – Steve Jobs

Children must be taught how to think, not what to think – Margaret Mead

Always prepare your children for the road, NEVER Prepare the road for your children – Kari Kampakis

Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Absolve you to yourself and you shall have the suffrage of the world – Ralph Waldo Emerson

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves – Abraham Lincoln

You don’t have to worry about burning bridges if you are building your own – Kerry Wagner

Foolish faith in authority is the worst enemy of truth – Albert Einstein

Tradition, a cage for the free spirit – Martin Kubin

The above gives some lead as to the way forward. Henceforth, care less about what you drive. But please be mindful of what drives you.

Thank you and God bless.

Prof. Segun Ajibola, the Past President/Chairman of Council, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, delivered a high impact and scintillating lecture during the 2021 Adeleke University Convocation Lecture. çanakkale escort Here is the details of the lecture titled, THE YOUTH, THE CAREER IN A SELF RELIANT AGE.
